My first step in New York wasn’t down the sidewalks of Manhattan, riding the subways to Brooklyn, or eating tacos in the Bronx. My first month was with my friend TJ’s family up on the hill in Honeoye. Between the breeze over the water flowing into the field next to it, I found it incredibly peaceful. I am happy to have become friends with his dad, I learned more about his family and him personally. Once I came to the city I was introduced to so many more people on a scale larger than I had experienced in my last year traveling. Jumping between having miles of fields and a pond to ponder by yourself, to be surrounded through every block you go down was a stark contrast for me. Tie this in with understanding how much life TJ’s dad has lived along with others I’ve met in the city, I felt this piece helped me convey how overwhelming it felt to me, both in scale and composition.
